New Bedford is perhaps best known for its heritage as global leader in whaling, textiles, and commercial fishing. As a coastal city with a storied history, New Bedford is emerging as a vibrant metropolitan center for the South Coast of Massachusetts.
The NBEDC will always fight alongside our fishing industry and traditional manufactures, amongst ever increasing pressures, to keep good blue-collar jobs in New Bedford. We are a hard working city, and these jobs have served our citizens well.
At the same time we are embracing the challenges of thriving in a new economy. We are taking the lead in attracting jobs in new growth industries that are a good fit for our city and our citizens. In the context of a global economy, New Bedford cannot afford to fall behind; in fact, we are putting forth our maximum effort to lead in the areas of: bio-tech manufacturing and life sciences, marine science and technology, creative enterprises, and perhaps most significantly in global industries such as offshore renewable energy.
