The
City’s history is captured in its beautiful architecture.
Its place in history is preserved in the National Historic Park,
a 13 block area of downtown that interprets the city’s role as a
the “Whaling Capital of the World”. The park includes the New
Bedford Whaling Museum which is considered to be the world’s
foremost museum dedicated to the history of whaling.
A 97 Acre park at the heart of the city, designed by Fredrick
Law Olmstead, includes the historic Buttonwood Park Zoo. Several
public beaches and parks offer picturesque views of the Atlantic
Ocean and the Elizabeth Islands. A wide range of cultural
activities such as the Feast of the Blessed Sacrament (the
largest Portuguese Madeiran feast in the world) and the
Summerfest Folk Festival offers opportunities to relax in and
enjoy the comforts of the community. The Zeiterion Theatre, an
historic performing arts center, is home to the New Bedford
Symphony Orchestra. Across the city, cultural and educational
events are staged year round.
