NEW BEDFORD, Mass. — Preservation Massachusetts, a
statewide non-profit historic preservation organization
dedicated to preserving the Commonwealth's historic and
cultural heritage, has recognized Winn Development
Companies with the prestigious Paul E. Tsongas Award for
their historic preservation efforts at New Bedford's
Whaler's Place.
Winn redeveloped the southern portion of the historic
waterfront Whitman Mill into affordable housing known
today as Whaler's Place. Originally built in 1894, the
property has housed a garment and textile factory, a
wholesale store and is now home to 75 one and
two-bedroom apartments and townhouses for residents age
55 and older.
At the recent 21st Annual Awards Dinner, Preservation
Massachusetts recognized Winn Companies efforts in
creating much needed affordable senior housing while
effectively rehabilitating and reusing a piece of New
Bedford's history.
On hand to accept the award on behalf of Winn Companies
were Larry Curtis, managing partner, and senior vice
president Jon Rudzinski. They were joined by the project
architect, The Architectural Team of Chelsea, along with
Keith Construction of Stoughton, the construction
manager for Whaler's Place.
"It is really exciting to be a part of a project, that
has such a fascinating history," said Larry Curtis. "We
are proud to be able to preserve that history in a way
that will benefit the community for years to come."
In addition to the Tsongas Award, Winn Companies has
also received the 2007 J. Timothy Anderson Award for
Excellence in Historic Rehabilitation from the National
Housing and Rehabilitation Association for its work at
Whaler's Place.
Adding to the evening's accolades for Winn Companies was
the awarding of a second Tsongas for their work at the
Baker Square II property in Dorchester where they
continue to rehabilitate the historic chocolate factory
mills into 60 units of quality rental housing while
retaining the historic charm and providing an economic
boost to the area.
In late May, Winn Development Companies was also
recognized for their historic preservation efforts by
the Massachusetts Historical Commission for their
efforts to restore the historic values at the Apartments
at Boott Mills in Lowell.
Headquartered in Boston with over 2,000 employees, Winn
Companies has over 35 years of experience in the
development and management of properties throughout the
United States with real estate holdings valued in excess
of $1.5 billion
