New Bedford Bay Sox kick off 2009 season June 4th
The New Bedford Bay Sox will kick off their inaugural
season at Paul Walsh Field on Thursday, June 4th at 6:30
p.m. The team will take on the Holyoke Blue Sox, in
their first of 45 games this summer.
Opening Day will provide an enjoyable and exciting
atmosphere for those of all ages. CEO and owner of the
Bay Sox, Robin Wadsworth said, “We want to provide a
fun, family, wholesome entertainment at an affordable
price so that everyone is going to want to show up day
in and day out. We’re going to create an atmosphere that
is enthusiastic and people aren’t going to want to leave
– that’s our mission.”
The night will consist of promotions, giveaways,
cheerleaders, and games for the children. The Bay Sox
will also be unveiling their new mascot, who will be
walking around throughout the night to greet fans.
The Bay Sox, formerly known as the Torrington Twisters,
chose New Bedford as its new home this past December.
Wadsworth noted both the strong baseball community and
large population as key factors in her decision. “The
city blew our socks off with what they had to offer,”
she said, “We are so excited to be here in New Bedford
to open our 2009 season.”
The team, a member of the New England Collegiate
Baseball League (NECBL), entered the league in 1997.
Since then, there have been 144 former players who have
gone on to play professional baseball.
Recognized as the premiere summer college development
league in the world, the NECBL is a “pro-prospect
league” funded in part by Major League Baseball. With
robust partnerships with college coaches, pro scouts and
twelve New England communities, the NECBL showcases the
world's elite college baseball players with a 45 game
schedule including annual games with Team USA,
international all-star touring teams and the US Military
All Stars.
The Bay Sox will play a 22 home game schedule, along
with an exhibition game against the US Military All
Stars throughout the months of June and July.
Paul Walsh Field is located across from New Bedford High
School at the corner of Parker and Hunter Street.
