Vectrix Expands, Relocates NB Operations

NEW BEDFORD — Vectrix Corporation, maker of the world’s first high performance, two-wheel zero emission vehicle ZEV, will begin working out of its new location this week in New Bedford Business Park.
Anticipating what managing director of marketing Jeff Morrill describes as explosive growth in the “green transportation” industry, Vectrix Corp. has moved into a 65,000-square-foot facility at 55 Samuel Barnet Boulevard.
“We see the smart car as a growing category as we look at the price of oil and global warming,” said Mr. Morrill. “Whether it’s in solar panels in your home or in transportation options, we see explosive growth.”
Once home to the initial production line for Vectrix at their Cove Street location, New Bedford is now the primary facility for research and development as well as dealer training, and warehousing and distribution for the North American market. The company employs 30 people in New Bedford, however there is room for many more.
The Vectrix ZEV is an innovative vehicle that relies solely on electricity for power. With top speeds of 62 mph, the Vectrix ZEV has an average range of 40 to 60 miles per charge. The nickel metal hydride (NiMH) battery pack has an estimated life of up to 10 years, based on 5,000 miles per year of use.
“We went all the way,” said Mr. Morrill. “No gas, no oil, but no compromise. You don’t give up performance. It’s a revolution in personal transportation.”
Headquartered in Middletown, RI, Vectrix Corp. employs 166 people worldwide. Its target markets include France, Spain, Italy and the U.K.
The Vectrix ZEV is currently available in the Newport flagship store at a cost of $11,000.
“The average cost per mile is just under one penny,” said Mr. Morrill. “Compare that with average gas prices at almost $3 a gallon.”
